You’re wrong, Jeff Goodby

Sorry, Mr. Jeff Goodby, co-chairman and creative director of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, but you’re wrong.

In a recent  article in Advertising Age, you condemned the awards culture in advertising. You said that it “rewards work that is increasingly unknown to anyone outside the business.”

You labeled people who subscribe to the awards culture as connoisseurs of esoterica.

And in the process, you said, we’re becoming more about us, and less about changing the world.

Hate to break it to ya, Jeff, but scam ads aside, you’re wrong.

Because, if you’re labeling the awards culture the fringe, then you’re also admitting that it is part of the long tail.

Today’s culture accommodates esoterica. And the Internet is its curator.

If there is an audience for anything on the Internet, then there is an audience for award-winning work, outside of advertising. And you can find them at places like Twitter, YouTube and of course, FFFFOUND!

You’ll find people who appreciate clever advertising anywhere. In music forums, on typography blogs and even good old fashion MSN. In fact, the probability of finding award-winning ads on the Internet is now more than ever since our industry discovered the wonderful world of viral marketing.

(And of course, there’s Google)

So, with all due respect, sir, you’re totally missing the point: Awards are not killing the industry. Scam work, probably.

But not awards, because now is the time for really creative work to not only shine but also, to be found.

Fake MINI Viral FTW

It’s been a while since I wrote anything about MINI, after all, it has been almost a year since I last worked on the brand, but this YouTube spot wins on so many levels.

The direction is great, the effects are pretty but what I love the most about this spot is that it makes fun of viral ads, while remaining incredibly on-brand. I mean, Still Free was great and Bike Hero was awesome, but this just about blows everything else out of the water.

I wish we could have done something like this when we launched The Other MINI in Malaysia, last year.

The TelePresence is strong with this one

I’ve experienced Cisco’s TelePresence technology and I must say, it’s pretty amazing.

I met up with bloggers Daniel Cerventus and James Yeang to test the TelePresence 3000, recently. It was all pretty informal, which is good; no major PR fuss, no jostling for front row seats or fighting over swag. They showed us to a room, sat us down and bang, we were looking across a table at people in Singapore just like they were sitting right in front of us.

The folks in Singapore were, in fact, sitting in a room much like ours. It was tastefully lit, had three 65-inch screens and chairs and a table.

But as we introduced ourselves and got to know a little about them, it felt more like our two rooms were magically linked together, rather than just a bunch of people talking to each other like they weren’t thousands of miles apart.

If you’re used to Skype or MSN video calls, just imagine what it would be like to be talking to someone far away yet be completely free of lags, audio clipping or just about any other annoyance that comes with modern video-conferencing. It’s not that I’m being paid to say this, but TelePresence is just that good. I’d love to have a look at their usability case studies because it’s wonderful how they made it so easy to use.

Of course, we ended up chatting long past our time limit, but hey, it’s not every day you get to experience a bit of science fiction come to life, right?

While the cost and practical use may deter private ownership, I’d definitely recommend this sort of tech to companies as a way of improving communication between offices and cutting down travel costs. You’d probably end up saving a hell of a lot more with one of these babies in your HQ, where you can dial in and ‘meet up’ with your counterparts practically every day, instead of wasting money flying people all over the place for short business trips, all year round.

WALL-E = Steady

Finally watched WALL-E with Nora yesterday. I thought it was going to be just another cutesy Disney animated feature, but as it turned out, there’s more to that clumsy little bucket of bolts than I ever imagined.

I particularly liked the attention-to-fucking-awesome-detail, the space dance scene; I thought that was quite cute, and of course, that short art history lesson that accompanied the end credits. Great stuff. Thank you, Pixar.

I had a wonderful time.

Hey, this could have been a clever idea for a non-traditional advertising campaign, Capcom.

Pointless, but yes, to quote blogger Craig Axxie, it’s quite brilliant.
